In 1885, O.F. Pilcher of McArthur, Ohio began selling insurance to local farmers.
That March, he was traveling by carriage through the local hilly farmland when
a snowstorm ensued. He stopped at a nearby farm and asked to wait out the storm.
The local farmer welcomed him and offered him a meal and a place to stay for the
night. Conversation turned to fire insurance and by the end of the evening, the
farmer purchased a policy to protect his farm. Westfield Insurance Company and
Knox Insurance Agency still insure this farm today, through five generations of
agents and 3 generations of farm-owners.
